Camp Objectives
As part of the educational component of the foundation, we created a summer day camp in 2004 called “Frogs, Flowers & Friends” for pre-school and early elementary school special needs children. The camp and its programs were designed to fill the void in therapy left out by many school districts over the summer months.
It is well established that children with Autism require uninterrupted therapy to prevent regression of the skills they struggle to obtain during the school year. Either due to budgetary concerns, or a general lack of understanding of Autism, many school districts refuse to provide the extended school year services that these special children desperately need.
The main objective of the Frogs Flowers & Friends camp is to ensure each child's progress is maintained during the summer months in a safe, friendly, high quality, low cost camp which emphasizes fun.
Objectives are met by:
- subsidizing the cost of camps so that all families have the opportunity to participate
- tailoring to the individual needs of each child by carful screening and pairing with camp staff
- a 1 to 1 camper to staff ratio
- highly trained staff including experienced ABA therapists and special education teachers
- fun activities aimed at reinforcing social and behavioral skills such as swimming, music, and art.
Our Staff
All of our staff and volunteers are trained in CPR. Additional training in basic ABA theory and techniques is required of all staff.
Instructors
Marietta Kiguelman was one of Ethan’s first therapists from the New Jersey Early Intervention Program, when Ethan was only 2 years old. She was one of the first people to truly connect with Ethan and taught him to trust others. Marietta has worked with children on the autistic spectrum for over 7 years, holding a position in the St. Joseph’s Hospital Development Intervention Department, as well as working as an in-home Early Intervention Therapist.
Mall Kiil has 18 years experience as a music teacher for children with special needs. She created, implemented and taught the music program at the Forum school in Waldwick, N.J. She is currently enrolled in the music therapy masters program at New York University. Mall does therapeutic music with Ethan and will be running the music segment of the camp. Mall’s teaching philosophy is to invite the children to experience music through singing, instruments, musical stories and movement. Through music, Mall offers our children another way of expressing themselves and interacting socially. We are honored and excited to have her at our camp!
Stephanie Schaefer graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a B.A. in Elementary Education and is a Certified Teacher of the Handicapped. Stephanie is now completing her Masters in Special Education at William Paterson University. Stephanie has over 7 years experience working with children on the autistic spectrum and multiply disabled students. Stephanie is currently teaching autistic children at the Lafayette Learning Center, Morristown NJ
